DATICAN Secondary School Hackathon in Ekiti State

One of the deliverables of DATICAN was to train secondary school students in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its medical applications. The whole idea was to encourage young people to develop interest in AI and medical applications. The leadership of DATICAN is of the opinion that this approach has the potential to increase the participation of Nigerians in the development of AI tools, particularly for health sectors.
The first version of the secondary school hackathon was in 2024 in Lagos. The 2025 version was in Ekiti State, February 10 to 14, 2025, at St. Mary's Girls Grammar School in Ikole Ekiti. The hackathon was a complete success, igniting passion for technology in the students. A total of 40 students (70% girls) were trained, they were selected from four secondary schools – St. Mary's Girls Grammar School, Ansar-Ud-Deen High School, Holy Apostolic High School, and Egbeoba High School, all in Ekiti State in Nigeria.
The opening ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including the Honorable Commissioner for Infrastructure, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko and the Honorable Commissioner for Education, Dr. Kofoworola Aderiye, represented by Mr. Eweje. Also in attendance were the Area Education Officer for Ekiti North LGA (Mrs. Falade), the principals of - St. Mary’s Girls Grammar School (Mrs. Esan Florence Adejoke), Holy Apostolic High School (Mrs. Kilani Bridget Bola), Egbeoba High School (Mr. Olusola Adegite) and Ansar-Ud-Deen High School (Mrs. Adeloye).
We appreciate the trainers (Mr. Akintayo John, Mr. Asokere Mauton, Mr. Oke Monday, and Mr. Wheto Paul) for the excellent job.
The training closed with a coding competition and the best 3 students were given prizes. The best 3 students were Gbenga Folorunso from Holy Apostolic High School (1st position), Rashidat Saka, also from Holy Apostolic High School (2nd position) and Amirat Olawale from Ansar-ud-deen High Schoo (3rd position). Awe Marvellous from Egbeoba High School and Eze Faith, also from Egbeoba High School, were recognized for their hard work during the training, securing fourth and fifth positions respectively. The success of the DATICAN secondary school hackathon is a testament to the power of education and the transformative potential of technology. God bless DATICAN.
